Boulder’s Laurie Rugenstein captured a silver medal in the women’s 60-64 age group 400m, almost upsetting former Sullivan Award Winner Phil Raschker who ran 1:14.98. Rugenstein improved her personal best by 1 second, closing fast on the veteran Raschker. Her second place time was 1:15.91.
“It wasn’t as horrible as I thought it would be,” said Rugenstein after her silver medal performance. “I guess my training and recent races prepared me for this distance.”
Rugenstein followed up with bronze medals in the 800m (2:56.89) and 1500m (5:49.41) races. Both races featured new world-class phenomenon Sabra Harvey from Houston, Texas. Harvey set a world record in the 1500m with a time of 5:12.27.
Westminister’s Vinnie Baisile battled the world class fields in the 400m and 800m, finishing fifth and sixth respectively. Baisile’s times were 56.28 and 2:13.89.
CU graduate student Howard Sklar ran respectable times in both the 400m and 200m, but faced some of the stiffest competition in his 50-54 age group. Sklar recorded his second best time in the 400m (1:03.90), and 29.03 in the 200m.
Rugenstein, Baisile, and Sklar represent Boulder’s Ric Rojas Running Track Club.
