"W55. Rhona Trott. Versatile Canadian performer
who reminded me that
Canada has provinces (after that I mentioned the province rather
than just
saying "Canada"). Finished 1/100 of a second in front
of Ms. Nicoletti; I
called it wrong because Nicoletti was ahead by probably a foot with
5
meters to go. Oh, well"

Cathy Nicoletti captured two National Masters titles in Orono,
Maine last weekend. She outkicked Carolyn Smith Hannah in a tightly
contested finish in the women's 400-meters. Nicoletti caught Smith-Hannah
at 250 mark and battled with her down the straightaway, winning
by .29 seconds. "I ran my 400 exactly as planned, sticking
to Smith-Hanna," said Nicoletti. "I fought her off and
maintained my lead to the wire."
In the 200-meters Nicoletti edged by Canada's Rhona Trott on the
curve and opened a slight margin on the straightaway. Even the
announcer Peter Taylor had conceded the race to Nicoletti, who
suddenly faltered in the final 5 meters, allowing Trott to outlean
her by 1/100 second. "I should have just dived when my legs
gave out", lamented Nicoletti.
Dave Albo placed 9th in 1500M out of a field of 22, achieving
the All American Standard. His time was 4:40.83. He also ran a
season's best 2:16 in his 800M qualifier. In the 1500-meters Albo
faced the deepest and most talent laden field of 22 runners including
World Champion Jorge Ortiz Rivera, National Champion Stephen Chantry,
and David Cannon. "I stuck to my plan and tried to run a
tactical race under the windy conditions," said Albo. "The
result was pretty much at my fitness level at this time. I ran
my best time of the season by 10 seconds."
Bobby Fischer anticipated a top-three finish in the 2000-meters
speeplechase. However, Fischer experienced an unexpected explosion
of pain from his hamstring as he cleared the first barrier. He
still managed to negotiate 24 more barriers including the water
jumps to finish the race in 6th place. "I have experienced
for the first time what many track and field athletes have experienced,
that is, competing with a debilitating injury," said Fischer.
Mary Grene of Wichita, Kansas and representing the Athena Track
Club finished 4th in the women's 1500meters on Sunday morning,
and came back later in the day to set a World record in the 4x800-meter
relay as part of the team Athena. "We were re-routed out
of Kansas yesterday," said Grene. "So I was exhausted
for my 1500-meter race this morning. I was able to take a nap
after the race and felt fine for the relay."
