Groff Top "Survivor" at Greeley 4th of July 5K

Diane Groff prevailed in the "Cancer Survivor" category at the Greeley 4th of July Race for the Cure and in the process ran a personal best of 22:40.

Weinheimer Runs Personal Best at the 4th of July 5K

Fairview High School freshman-to-be Alex Weinheimer ran a personal best at Boulder's Fourth of July 5K. His time was 18:46 at the University of Colorado's East Campus course.

Weinheimer used an aggressive racing strategy, running his opening mile in 5:45.

"I wanted to start out fast and see if I could hold it," said Weinheimer.

When asked how he felt about his effort, he replied, "Pretty good."

Weinheimers previous best 5K time was 20:00 at the 2004 Kickoff Classic.

Kelly King Takes Two at Hershey's State Track Meet

Kelly did well at the Hershey State Track Meet last Saturday. She ran in both the 1600 and 800 races. After getting beat by her rival Katrina in the 1500 at the Junior Olympics state meet, she followed your advice and ran a tactical race against her at Hershey.

She shadowed Katrina for 3 ½ laps and then made her move at the 300M mark. She won the race with a time of 5:22 and beat Katrina by 6 seconds (all in the last 300M).

She also won the 800 race with a PR of 2:22 (and with negative splits!). We’ll have to wait for the results from the other states in our region to find out if she qualifies for the Hershey National Meet in August. Thanks for your support, Scott King

Unihill 2K Team Results
Kakasakis Wins the 1K

Ada Kakasakis used a wait-and-see strategy to win the 11-and-under 1K at last week's Unihill 2K. "It was my first really short race," said Kakasakis. "I planned to start slow and go faster on the downhill. I was just going to try it and see how I would do."

And she did very well. She suddenly found herself in the lead after 400-meters,and almost missed a turn in the middle of the race. "I was really shocked about being in the lead and it (the course) was really confusing. I though I'd gone the wrong way."

She was unaware that a small electronic pace car was leading the runners. "I saw the car at the end of the race," she said. "But I didn't know it was there before the end. I could have gone faster, but it was a good experience. It was my first time winnng a race."

Kakasakis' conservative race strategy and almost-wrong-turn didn't seem to hurt her. She won by a over 50-meters in a time of 4:07. She plans to run the West End 3K in July. The two-loop West End course shouldn't present any surprises - unless the pace car goes off course.
