Tracey Bernett Earns World #1 Ranking in the 60-64 AG Mile

RISE Athletics' Tracey Bernett clocked the world-leading mile time in her age group last month at the new Ocean Breeze track Facility on Staten Island, NY. Bernett approached the race with a conservative race plan, but ended up running much faster than her projection. "I wanted to break 6:40," recalls Bernett. "But I got some help from Nora Cary, who set a 6:30 pace. She was in the lead until I passed her in the last 400m, and I ended up running 6:29!"

Bernett's time registered 91.8% on the Masters' ranking scale

In the same meet, the New York USATF State Championships, she ran an 800 time of 3:01.97, ranking her #2 in the world in her age group. "I am savoring the moment, although I wouldn't be at all disappointed to be knocked down a few notches by those two nice women" says Tracey.

Her RISE Athletics coach Ric Rojas said "Tracey is focused, hardworking and coachable. She hardly ever misses a workout, and always on-task when it comes to executing workout instructions. This is a well-deserved ranking for Tracey."

Before starting with Rojas, Bernett had completed 35 marathons, but realizing there was no future in marathoning, looked for alternatives and found RISE Athletics (based in Boulder, CO). Like many of the RISE members, Tracey has excelled in middle distance track racing.

Bernett's next race will be the Kansas Relay's Masters Mile, to be held at the University of Kansas in Lawrence this April. This race will be outdoors, and with favorable conditions she may run even faster than 6:29.
